Why I Create
Artmaking has been an integral part of my life since I first picked up a paintbrush in 2017. I have always been drawn to abstract art as a way to move emotions and energy through my body.
My first explorations into abstract art were intuitive works that had absolutely no plan or reference, they were purely colors on canvas and marks that came from within without any premeditated source. While freeing, I soon felt that my painting practice lacked direction. I then stumbled upon the work of Scottish artist Orla Stevens, and under her instruction learned to combine emotions, memories, sounds, and my own love of nature into a completely transformational painting practice.
I have also begun printmaking and it’s now my new passion. I work primarily by wood engraving and sometimes delve into linocut. Each print centers around depicting nature or different aspects of the natural world.
I create because it’s an integral need, as essential to my body and mind as breathing. Artmaking has been with me through times of happiness, anxiety, and the greatest loss of my life, the sudden death of my partner. Just as art has been with me, so has nature. Nature has been my solace, my retreat, and my muse since I was a little girl. To me it’s only natural that I combine my love of the outdoors with my art practice. I hope my work communicates the sense of wonder and the many emotions I feel while in my favorite places near and far, and serves as a bridge to connect others with the natural world and their own internal landscape.
Artist Statement
My art practice combines a love of nature with personal memories, emotional experiences, and responses to the sounds of the natural world. Each work is an exploration of lived human experience centered around the belief that we are inherently connected to and part of nature, inviting the viewer to remember their own inherent connection while sharing my outdoor adventures, experiences, and meditations. I frequently consider the point of view of animals and plants in my work, as well as use field recordings that I or other people have made of sounds within landscapes, which I respond to through markmaking and color.
My work is influenced by the shapes, sounds, textures, colors, and beauty of the natural world. I hope my work encourages people to explore their own inner landscape, celebrate the healing power of nature, and protect our wild outdoor places.
